Rangatahi

We provide two seperate programmes/services for our 8 - 12 year olds and teenagers.

There is an after school programme one day per week for the 8 - 12 year olds. They either chill out and play games in Puanga (youth centre), or go around the Island with our Rangatahi Coordinators. So far they have been to the bush and had a talk with Witana Murray (Matakana Island Pest Control Officer); they've also been to the local Island winery and will be visiting some of the local farms. They are also provided with transport home after the programme is completed.
Some of the Matakana Island School kids are also involved in ukulele lessons held at the hauora.

8 - 12 yr olds after school programme

Our Rangatahi coordinator and staff work hard to come up with ideas and activities for our youth to participate in.

In the July school holidays of 2009 there was a holiday programme running for our tamariki.

The 8 - 12 year olds were taken for a day out on the mainland, they went to the movies.
For the 13 - 14 year olds - they also got to spend a day on the mainland and went blokarting and laser target shooting.
For 15 year olds & up - there was a trip planned to go to Auckland.
To be able to go on the trip there was a compulsory day at the hauora which included CV writing and involvement in one of the HEHA cooking classes.
They visited the Navy Base and also stayed the night at their marae. They also visited and stayed a night at Hato Petera College. While they were up there, they went to the movies, done the harbour bridge walk, and a couple of the rangatahi even done the harbour bridge bungy.
It was an excellent hikoi, with excellent feedback from rangatahi and their whanau.
